My Love of Tea Parties and Favorite Tea Sandwich Recipes

Making little tea party tea sandwiches is the perfect way to get your little ones to try different recipes. It is the cute shapes made in hearts, triangles, and cookie cutters that will interest even the pickiest eater.

As a child, I would have never tried one of these recipes but when cute finger sandwiches were served at our church’s high tea celebrations I could not get enough of them. My mother would also make these for guests when we had an afternoon tea party.

My love for these little mini sandwiches started very young. My childhood church served them for every tea party put on my the Women’s Guild. Cucumber tea sandwiches were served at every Easter Sunday andChristmas Eve formal tea reception as well as at all of the bridal showers and baby showers.

Traditional English Tea Sandwiches were my first introduction to cream cheese cucumber sandwiches. The savory ham salad recipe below and egg salad sandwiches with dill.

The best bread to use is a thin slice of bread. This way it is easy to cut and easy to remove the crust. The best bread to use is a thin slice of bread. This way it is easy to cut and easy to remove the crust. You can remove the very edge of the crust with a serrated knife or buy crustless bread from a bakery. For many of our family parties, so as not to waste food, I would leave the crust on, or use the crust in our bird feeder.

How To Make Tea Party Sandwiches

Mini sandwiches are so quick and easy to make. They keep well in the refrigerator if they are covered in plastic wrap, that way you can make them the day before. Traditionally Tea sandwiches werecrustless. You would purchase a regular loaf of bread remove the crust with a very sharp knife to make sure you got just the crust off and cut them intotriangles andsquares or use cookie cutters to make fun shapes.

Probably around the late 60s and 70s bread companies around the holidays would make little tiny square crustless bread packages. They are not really crustless the crust is just very very light and thin.

For my Valentine’s Day Party, triangles and squares just did not go with my heart theme, so I purchased some sturdy wheat bread and white bread that I could cut into adorable heart shapes for Valentine’s Day with my cookie cutters.

What to do with the unused bread

Making shapes out of bread does leave a lot of unused bread. I took all my loose ends and put them in a plastic bag and put them in the refrigerator to use for croutons later. Everyone loves croutons no matter the shape. I just make them bit sized, toss them with olive oil, basil, and oregano, and bake at 350 until they are golden brown.

Have fun with your food and make mini sandwiches you will be surprised how they are eaten up.
