The Best “Grown Up” FutonsDesign Ideas
Growing up, the only type of couches my family owned were futons. I thought they were the coolest— you could change the covers, they expanded for sleepovers, and they seemed much more modern than an overstuffed sofa. Nowadays futons are more often associated with dorm rooms than cool furniture. However, there’s no denying a futon’s small space convenience. Here are a few convertible options for your post-collegiate home.

10 Alternatives to Popular Kids IKEA ProductsDesign Ideas
An amazing thing happened in June 2008 — an IKEA opened two miles from my home. Oh, and my son was born. Before this a trip to IKEA meant descending into the bowels of Port Authority in Manhattan, boarding a standing room only shuttle bus to a New Jersey IKEA and then deciding whether to spend more money than you spent on purchases to arrange home delivery of your items or to limit yourself to what you could wrangle home on the bus and subway. It was a dark time.

Best Bargain Buys: 10 Stylish Lamps Under $100Design Ideas
It comes as no surprise that the phrase “lighting is everything” is commonly heard in the world of interior design. No matter how lovely a home is, how stylish or well arranged a living room, if the lighting leaves something to be desired, all that charm can quickly lose its luster. During daylight hours a lamp serves as an accessory to a room much in the way jewelry is to an outfit, but when night falls and the lamps turn on, we rely on them to create ambiance.

The idea of collecting art can be a daunting one and when it comes to finding the perfect pieces to fill your walls it can feel like there are only two directions you can go in, mass produced cookie-cutter art or the intimidating, confusing and often expensive option of buying directly from a gallery. Take the Quiz: Spot the IKEA!
When I first discovered IKEA, as a tender young college freshman, I was so psyched that there was beautiful modern furniture I could actually afford that I basically memorized their catalog. Whenever I went to a friend’s home I would identify all the things they had purchased from the Swedish retailer. (It was a little obnoxious.) Funnily enough, years later, I’m still doing the same thing.

How To Fix Cracks in Old Wood Floor?
Q: My apartment (rental) was built in the 1880’s and the floor has never been renovated – the uneven wood floors are painted white and have cracks and large gaps between them…I have always loved my floor but now I am pregnant and while I may cover the floor in the bedroom I am trying to find a way to fix the cracks & holes (some as big as 1 to 2 inches wide) without having to spend a ton of money – or putting down a whole new floor.

Over the holidays, I finally started on the spare bedroom in my Mom’s house. It has not seen any decorating love since the 80’s, and it was time to strip the wallpaper and give the walls a fresh coat of paint. I was a little apprehensive because I had never removed wallpaper before, but I soon realized it was more tedious than difficult. I also learned that it was a job that could be made easier with our favorite friend: white vinegar.
