My determination to use the turnip instead of the potato continues in my low carb kitchen.I made a batch of keto turnip fries with a zaatar seasoning and was rather pleased with the results.
I have tried various seasonings with these turnip fries from chilli, garlic, cheese but the winner in our house is Zaatar.Zaatar is a spice mixture that I was introduced to when we lived in the Middle East. I was also lucky to enjoy a colleagues home made version which was more fragrant than my efforts!

Are turnips low carb?
Turnips are relatively low in carbohydrates compared to some other root vegetables. They are a good option for those following a low-carb diet. In a 100-gram serving of turnips, there are approximately 6 grams of carbohydrates
Turnip is a healthier choice for potato but does need a bit of help with the seasoning. By itself it can be an acquired taste. You could make two batches to test your taste buds. Make a tray of plain and a tray of spiced.
Ingredients
I used a large turnip which yielded about 35 thinly cut turnip fries. This made a decent length too but you might be able to fashion a few decent shaped fries from a smaller turnip. Mine was bigger than my fist!I guess it depend upon how large your hands are to ascertain the turnip size!
Zaatar Spices
Although Zaatar is enjoyed all over the Middle East, it is heavily associated with Lebanon. It is to Lebanon what peanut butter is to the USA. It is mainly made withe dried thyme, sumac, salt and sesame seeds. There are regional variations with cumin, coriander and fennel but this will depend upon your taste buds.
How to make keto turnip fries
These turnip fries are baked and therefore will not be as crispy as a fast food potato fry but are a low carb option so give them a try. I found when baking them that they tended to be a big soggy and I recommend eating them immediately after baking. The Chief Taster scoffed the last batch with relish and they were heated up when he arrived home from work.
These are easy to air fry too.
Peel the turnip and cut into long French fry sticks
Toss in spices and place on baking tray.
Bake until cooked through.
Serve with a dip.
Storage
Once completely cooled, place the turnip fries in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag. Store in the refrigerator and the fries can generally last for around 3 to 5 days.
Reheating
When you're ready to reheat the turnip fries, you can use an oven or air fryer to help them regain some crispiness. Spread them out on a baking sheet and reheat at around 350°F (175°C) for a few minutes until they're warmed through and crisp.
Turnip Fries Seasoning Suggestions
Keto turnip fries can be seasoned in various ways to add flavor. Here are some seasoning suggestions to try:
- Classic Salt and Pepper: Simple yet effective, seasoning with salt and black pepper can bring out the natural flavors of the turnip.
- Garlic Parmesan: Toss in minced garlic, grated parmesan cheese, a bit of olive oil, salt, and pepper before baking. This combination provides a savory, umami-rich taste.
- Paprika and Cumin: A blend of paprika and cumin can add a smoky and slightly spicy flavor to the turnip fries. Combine these spices with a little salt and a touch of olive oil for a great taste.
- Rosemary and Thyme: Fresh or dried rosemary and thyme can add an herby, aromatic flavor. Toss the fries in these herbs, salt, pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil before baking.
- Cajun Seasoning: Create a zesty, spicy flavor by using a Cajun seasoning mix. Sprinkle it over the turnip fries along with a little oil before baking.
- Lemon Pepper: A combination of lemon zest, black pepper, and a touch of salt can give the turnip fries a bright, tangy taste.
- Curry Seasoning: Mix curry powder with a bit of olive oil and coat the turnip fries before baking for a flavorful, slightly exotic taste.
- Ranch Seasoning: Toss the turnip fries in a blend of ranch seasoning mix (or make your own with herbs and spices), salt, pepper, and a small amount of oil for a tangy, herby flavor.
Experiment with these seasonings or create your own blends to suit your taste preferences. Adjust the quantities according to the amount of turnip fries you're making, and don't be afraid to explore different combinations until you find your favorite.
