» Armelle Couillet – Cartographe, Présidente de l'Association les Cafés-cartographiques / « Beyond the map most often perceived as an image or an illustration, an orienteering page whatever its medium, a projection from reality to dream, a promise of new horizons, the one in Battir is an unlimited invitation to travel in the heart of geospatial data and our methods of institutional cartographic productions, which are usually not accessible to the general public. Battir offers the world the topographic adventure of its local Ecomuseum designed in 2OO3, implemented in the field from 2OO7 until November 2O11. lt is, first of all, an anthropological study initiated by a scientific team composed of young Palestinian architects-urbanists, anthropologists and ltalian landscape experts, later joined by a battirian civil engineer to survey, together, 12.5 Km2 of their surrounding territory. At the end of April 2O12, this civil engineer transmitted to the founder of 'les Cafés-cartographiques' their cartographic data files, so that their measurements could be geometrically rectified from Paris ('ORTHONORMED'), completed, enhanced, universally explained and understood by all. He wanted to bring their visionnary study to life and preserve the heritage knowledge of his village, of his country. Since, it is a monumental local work, resulting from an unprecedented citizen scientific initiative, originally non-institutional, complete, and graciously available, that has been globaly displayed. It is a collaborative masterpiece that we have been restoring for almost 1O years now. It is a public good whose data, like the rights to the data, belong to the village community of Battir. Here, the civil society mobilized itself to speak to the world, in order to remind everyone where and how it exists. lt has surveyed and mapped out itself in the aim to define its own patrimony, to better understand how to protect it. In order to protect its way of living in its several thousand years old sustainable environment. From the moment we met, our united and universel mapping skills responded to the urgency of this call to knowledge, to the demanded need for recognition. Today, we would like to thank our national and international professional community, whose ongoing collaboration allows us to regularly present to all the state of this work in process. We thank Hervé Quinquenel (engineer SIG/GIS-cartographer, IGN) and the National School of Geographical Sciences, as well as each of its many students who have contributed, since 2O12, to enrich and protect this exceptionaI battirian citizen cartographic patrimony. We also thank our friends who have immediately understood the importance of this cartographic adventure, unique in history, and were able, each in their own way, to bring their know-how, their imagination, their will to share what makes its sense and humanity. By its graphic language accessible at a first little curious glance, large-scale mapping, anchored into reality, knows how to account for the identity of the territory and its in habitants. The topographic map federates our looks. lt inscribes its precision in living memories to enrich minds. On behalf of all, THANK YOU. Thank you to the citizens of Battir who sustain their Mapping-Workshops, staying mobilized at our side, from 'The Gardens of Paradise' of Battir ... AL-JENAN, from their springs to their flowery, wooded, fragrant plots, watered by the living water equitably shared from the Roman Basin to the ancient canals running from terraces to valleys ... Welcome ! les Cafés-cartographiques thank you all for being there. »

2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE “RE-SHAPING TERRITORIES, ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIETIES - NEW CHALLENGES FOR GEOGRAPHY” (RETES), 20-21 November 2020, Bucharest, Romania
Alina Mareci
Analele Universitatii Bucuresti: Geografie/Annals of the University of Bucharest – Geography Series, 2021
The year 2020 marked 120 years of geographical studies at the University of Bucharest, the 30 th anniversary of the Faculty of Geography and the 100 th anniversary of the Department of Human and Economic Geography. Considering this important landmark and after the success of the first edition organised in 2016, the Department of Human and Economic Geography, coordinated by prof. Liliana Dumitrache was very happy to hold the 2 nd International Conference "Re-shaping Territories, Environment and Societies-New Challenges for Geography" (ReTES) which took place on November 20 th-21 st , 2020. This edition had to consider the severe limitations created by the COVID-19 pandemic. While face to face interactions and cooperation are the optimal medium through which ideas and experiences can be shared, the organisers embraced this challenge and strived to bring together all interested parties and reach as many members of the academic community and, more than that, attract those for whom a trip to Bucharest, Romania would have proven difficult even in normal travelling conditions. The organisers were honoured to receive the interest of 91 professors, researcher, experts, specialists, PhD students or students who registered and participated in the 2 nd International Conference "Re-shaping Territories, Environment and Societies-New Challenges for Geography"
