Mrs. Elizabeth Archer Creel

Seaboard, NC - Mrs. Elizabeth Archer Creel, age 87, of Seaboard, NC, died Thursday, June 7, 2012 at her home.

Mrs. Creel was born December 15, 1924 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Charlie James Archer and Annie Mae Warrick Archer. She was also predeceased by her husband, Marvin W. Creel, a son, Glen A. Martin and two brothers, Pershing Archer and James Archer. She retired a few years ago from Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

Survivors include her son, Charlie Creel and his wife Dianne of Conway, NC. Her grandchildren, Glenda Faye Martin, Greg Martin, Danielle Creel McGee and Kimberly Creel Brittenham. One great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be held, Sunday, June 10, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the Creel Family Cemetery with Rev. David Foster officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Saturday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM and other times at the home of her son.

Alvin Bernice Coston

Greenville, NC - Alvin Bernice Coston, age 91, died June 7, 2012. The funeral service will be conducted Monday, June 11, 2012 at 1:00 PM in the Massey Funeral Home Chapel, 839 Jackson Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC. Interment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery, also in Roanoke Rapids.

Mr. Coston was born October 30, 1920, in Richlands, NC, the son of the late James Paul Coston and Zannie Padrick Coston. He was also preceded in death by his first wife Mary Cates Coston and his second wife Margaret Barnes Coston, as well as his two brothers and three sisters.

Mr. Coston was a native of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and a graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School, class of 1938. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II with the rank of Carpenters Mate 1st Class aboard the USS Bellatrix in the South Pacific theatre.

He was a gifted wood craftsman and was president of Coston's Cabinet Works in Roanoke Rapids from the late 1940's -1970's He and his late wife Mary were founding members of Rosemary Methodist Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Angel Coston Melvin, her husband, John, of Greenville, grandchildren, Claire Oliver and Cameron Melvin, as well as two great-grandchildren, Sophie and Stephen. He is also survived by his extended family of his second wife; including, her four children; Lisa Flanagan, her husband, Grey ton, and their children, Grey ton and Magen of Greenville; Linda Hall, of Georgia; James Barnes, of Charlotte; Hal Barnes, of Florida and their families.

He is also survived by his dog, Roxy, who was his best friend and constant companion in his later years.

He was beloved by all who knew him ... a loving and gentle soul.

Dharam Pal

Roanoke Rapids, NC – Dharam Pal, 61, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died June 5, 2012 at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh, NC.

He was preceded in death by his parents Bakshi Ram and Shanti Kaur of India.

He is survived by his wife Tarsem Kaur, his sons Harmail Lal of Roanoke Rapids, Nirmal Nigah and Om Lal of India, his daughter Monika of India and three grandchildren.
He was loved by all and will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 1:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home Chapel, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

The family will receive friends Saturday, June 16, 2012 from 12:00 – 1:00 PM prior to the service at Massey Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Mr. Lawrence Pal Brunett, Jr.

Enfield, NC – Mr. Lawrence Pal Brunett, Jr., died Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at the age of 76, at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount, NC. He was born June 14, 1935,

Mr. Brunett proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps.

He is preceded in death by his parents Charles Herbert Brunett Sr. and Woneta Dordie Brunett.

Surviving is his wife Barbara Inez Harlow Brunett, his sons: Winfred Keith Brunett Sr. of Penny Hill, NC, Lawrence Brunett Jr. of Enfield, NC and Jeffery Lee Brunett of Rocky Mount, NC, eight grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren, his sisters: Mary Ann Nelson and Betty Lou Yeargan.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, June 9, 2012 2:00 PM at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Enfield, NC; the Rev. Alvin Davis officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Enfield, NC.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 8, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home, Enfield, NC.

Ms. Phyllis Shipley Bridgers

Greenville, NC – Ms. Phyllis Shipley Bridgers died June 4, 2012 at Vidant Medical Center, Greenville, NC.

Ms. Bridgers was a resident of Golden Living Center for ten years, and is a member of Jackson Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents Dan and Grace Gross Shipley.

She is survived by her daughter, Cassandra Burt and husband Travis of Greenville, her son Whit Bridgers, II and wife Teresa of OH, her brothers: Lyman Shipley, Johnny Shipley, Dan Shipley, Dusty Shipley and Kenny Shipley, her sisters: Delores Sibley and husband George and Sue Cross, her grandchildren: Branden Burt, Kirsten Burt, Eric Bridgers, Chase Bridgers and Sandra Bridgers and her former husband Whit Bridgers Sr.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Calvary United Methodist Church Cemetery, Littleton, NC, Rev. Stan Lewis officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Jackson Baptist Church or Calvary United Methodist Church women's auxiliary.

Teresa Wright Farrar

Chattanooga, TN - Teresa Wright Farrar passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at Hospice Care Center of Chattanooga, TN, after a 10-year battle with Pick’s Disease.

She was born Jan. 1, 1945, in Roanoke Rapids, NC. She was a secretary to the hospital administrator at Medical College of Virginia up until 1981. She then moved to Chattanooga, TN, in 1982 after marrying L.D. Farrar Jr., a Chattanooga attorney, who preceded her in death. Her loving aunt, Lorene Wright Warren also preceded her in death.

She was a loving mother to her daughter, Katherine Farrar (Reed) Hayes, of Chattanooga. Other survivors include her mother, Helen Gathright; brother, Adam Wright; sister, Linda Wright, all of Roanoke Rapids; cousin and caregiver, Gail Endicott; and several other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Saturday, June 9, in the chapel of Massey Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Taylor Funeral Home of Chattanooga Inc. is handling the arrangements.

Mr. John Daniel "Jackie" Warrington, III

Margarettsville, NC - Mr. John Daniel "Jackie" Warrington, III, age 70, of Margarettsville, NC, died May 29, 2012 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

Mr. Warrington was born March 15, 1942 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He was preceded in death by his father, John Daniel Warrington Jr. and a half brother Billy Gay. He served his country in the US Air Force. He retired from Halifax Paper Board Mill in Roanoke Rapids.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Hasty Warrington. His mother, Josie Newsome Gay of Seaboard, NC. Three sons, John Mark Warrington, Patrick Andrew Warrington and Robert Daniel Warrington. Three step-children, Mae Woodard Rose and husband Mike, Leneau Woodard Pope and husband Chuck and Raymond Robert Woodard. One half brother, Bobby Gay and one step-grandchild, Ciara Taylor Pope.

Graveside services will be held, Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Beechwood Cemetery in Boykins, VA with Rev. Jim Cox and Rev. Larry Cribb officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Friday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Mr. Leon Long Peffer

Henderson, NC – Mr. Leon Long Peffer, 84, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at the home of his son in Henderson, NC.

Mr. Peffer was a US Army Veteran serving during the Korean War; while in Korea, he once worked on Senator Richard Nixon’s Car. He was retired from CSX Railroad after 45 years of faithful service and was a member of Charity Baptist Church in Hopewell, VA, where he had served as the Sunday School Director and sang in the choir.

He is preceded in death by his parents Charles Fredrick and Eva Lou Wells Peffer, his son Leon Long Peffer II and daughter Linda Leigh Owens.

Surviving is wife Bonnie Draper Peffer, his sons: David Peffer and wife Paula of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Terry Peffer and wife Susan of Henderson, NC, his daughters: Debbie Braswell of Littleton, NC, and Darlene Taylor and husband Bobby of Kinston, NC, his step-son Calvin Draper Barnes and wife Linda of Hopewell, VA, a step-daughter Penny Ann Sledge and husband Jerry of Smithfield, NC, a sister Myra Drewery of Smithfield, VA, fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday, June 2, 2012 11:00 AM at Massey Funeral Home Chapel Roanoke Rapids, NC; the Rev. Dean Jarvis officiating. Burial will follow at Bermuda Memorial Park, Chester, VA.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 1, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Mrs. Mary Singletary Davis

Raleigh, NC - Mrs. Mary Singletary Davis, age 92, of Raleigh, NC, and formerly of Wilson, NC, died Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at Tower Nursing and Rehabilitation in Raleigh, NC.

She was predeceased by her parents Douglas Singletary and Lillie Stewart Singletary and her husband Otha Davis.

She is survived by her daughter, Jackie Davis of Wilson, NC. Her step-daughter, Virginia Allen of Germantown, NC. Two sisters, Betty Jones of Florence, SC and Evelyn Head of Columbus, SC. Her stepdaughter-in-laws, Lillian Davis and Mildred Davis. Also, several step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held, Friday, June 1, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, with Rev. Ray Barnhill officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Thursday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Mrs. Hazel Johnson "Mema" Pope

Franklin, VA – Mrs. Hazel Johnson "Mema" Pope, 87, of Boykin, VA, died Monday, May 28, 2012 at South Hampton Memorial Franklin, VA.

Mrs. Pope is known to her children as a loving mother, and her family says "Mema’s memory will never grow old."

She is preceded in death by her husband, James Pope, her parents Henry B. and Bessie J. Pope Johnson, her brothers C.F. "Pill" Johnson, Clyde Johnson and Jack Nelson and her sister Mittie Barnes.

Surviving are her sons, Carlton Pope and wife Lillie of Windsor, NC, and Dale Pope and wife Donna of Boykins, VA. Also surviving is a sister Margie Burgess of Rich Square, NC, granddaughters Donna White and husband M. J. and Samantha Pope Dowd and husband Josh, her grandson James Matthew (Matt) Pope and Kaitlyn, great-grandchildren Kayla White, Jim White Jr., Keaton White, Lauren White, Jennifer Byrum, Niki Byrum, Kloee Pope and Logan Dowd, great-great-grandchildren, Sophie Byrum and Brayden White, nieces, Beatrice Barnes and husband Ray, Gayle Johnson and husband Ronnie, Katherine Buckner and husband Ed and Gloria Pinto, nephews, Woodie Johnson and wife Sandra, Wallace Turner and wife Betty, Pete Turner and wife Gilda, David Turner and wife Mary and Alton Burgess and wife Nell.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, May 31, 2012 2:00 PM at Boykins Baptist Church, Boykins, VA, with the Rev. Raymond Bunn and the Rev. Charles Alvis officiating. Burial will follow at Beechwood Cemetery in Boykins, VA.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, NC, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Boykins Baptist Church or Berean Baptist Church, Boykins, VA.
